What happens when a company needs to handle surplus or retired equipment? Technology evolves rapidly and equipment needs to be updated and/or replaced. Many companies do not have an asset disposition program in place or do not have the expertise to securely and environmentally responsibly dispose of their equipment. The process to address this is called ITAD and is defined as "the disposal of obsolete or unwanted [IT] equipment in a safe and ecologically-responsive manner".

There are many things that need to be taken into account. For example: What about sensitive data on the equipment? How should that be handled? What is the ethicaly responsible manner to dispose of this equipment? and so on. This requires an expert in ITAD.
